Can Electronic Cigarettes Help You Quit Smoking?
People ask me again and again, what is the best electronic cigarette to quit smoking?
Although it’s a great question which we will cover on these pages, let’s start first by asking whether or not electronic cigarettes actually do help smokers quit smoking in the first place. Do electronic cigarettes really help smokers quit smoking?
There has been much lively debate recently and the answer is yes. E-cigarettes can help with quitting smoking, but they in no way are a guaranteed method of quitting as we all know there are none.
Let’s face it, quitting smoking isn’t easy. It takes commitment and willpower. Electronic cigarettes can be great aids, but they certainly won’t do it for you.
As a smoker for over 20 years, I have tried every method available. I tried the nicotine gum, the patches, the inhalers, my doctor even prescribed me Champix at one time.
Nothing worked. Does that mean the methods themselves are flawed? No, not at all. I know many people who have quit using these methods and they swear by them. They didn’t work for me simply because I wasn’t actually ready to quit.
I had a desire to be smoke free but it wasn’t stronger than my desire to continue smoking, I just loved to smoke. During that period, no method or technique would have worked because I was only attempting to quit in an effort to please the people in my life who hated hearing me cough and seeing me continue to light up.
Electronic cigarettes would have been no different. I read a great book during that period called The Easy Way to Stop Smoking by Allen Carr. In many ways, that book helped me more than anything because it changed my ideas about smoking completely and it helped me to see through some of my addictive thoughts about it.
It’s a book I would recommend to anyone who is still smoking and is contemplating the idea of quitting, it will help you to see smoking in a whole new light.
It’s a book that stayed with me and over time helped me evolve new ideas in regards to cigarettes and addiction in general.
Even with that, it was still a couple of years before I actually quit.
When I was finally ready, I decided to try electronic cigarettes. Like the gum or the patch, electronic cigarettes are a NRT (Nicotine Replacement Therapy) and can help with the cravings.
The added bonus with the e-cigs is that you get the nicotine delivered in very much the same way as a regular cigarette, so the switch can be less painful. It can and does become more pleasurable than smoking the real thing, it just takes a bit of time.
Even with the electronic cigarettes, I still smoked for months, alternating back and forth between the two like a pendulum. Only after about a year was I finally able to put the real cigarettes down for good.
I loved quitting with the electronic cigarette, the only method close for me was the inhalers but the taste was horrendous and the nicotine tasted and felt too pharmaceutical. E-cigs were the best method for me because it gave me the ability to calm my nicotine cravings down in style, with some awesome and varied flavors.
I still feel like I get all the pleasure of smoking, in fact I can’t imagine smoking a real cigarette now because once you get used to the vapor, the actual cigarettes start to taste really bad.
Even if you never actually quit smoking, but used an e-smoke half the time, you would still be doing your body a favor by smoking half the cigarettes. Vapor is far, far better than smoke.
Considering that electronic cigarettes deliver nicotine in tailored doses, enough to suit anyone’s habit, at the same time as simulating the feeling of smoking quite well, do you think electronic cigarettes can help you quit smoking? That’s all that really matters now isn’t it?
There has been a lot of propaganda coming out lately about the possible negative effects of e-cigs, vaping and even worries about the risks of exposure to non users by being in proximity to someone using an e-cigarette.
Take a moment to watch the video below where Dr. Gilbert Ross, the Medical Director for The American Council on Science and Health puts all that to rest in under 3 minutes. He himself used an e-cigarette to quit smoking. To any skeptics out there, it’s worth a watch.
Is the electronic cigarette right for you? Only you know for sure but if you think that e-cigs will help you quit smoking, and you’re ready to give them a try, use this site to find one that suits you.
